stix76 Posted June 13, 2009 Report Share Posted June 13, 2009 I have a Dell laptop running windows xp pro. Been working really well for a long time. I use 2 different hard drives on the laptop. One is used for work and the other for personal use.I had my work hard drive in the laptop with windows in STANDBY. One of my kids has removed the work hard drive and inserted the personal use hard drive and then hit the power button to turn the machine on. It now wont boot on that hard drive. The other one works fine. I do not get a message telling me there is an error. After the whole POST process finishes I get a black screen and nothing happens.My first thought was I can just load the windows xp cd and run the recovery console. When I tried this it is telling me the drive has nothing on it and I don't have an option to run the recovery console. I don't care about formatting the drive and starting again however I would like to try and recover a few files if possible.What are my options? After trying many time to get the machine to boot I now get some text however it is just 11 unusual characters I am not sure how to reproduce in this thread. I booted the laptop from a USB key with a linux distro and the HDD was visible (not mounted) however when I attempt to mount it I get an error message:$MFTMirr does not match $MFT (record 0)NTFS is either inconsistent or you have hardware faults.When booting from the XP pro CD it shows C: Partition1 [unknown] 76317 MB ( 76316 MB free ) Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
