Windows BSOD when trying to install Windows :(

Hi,

I'm trying to install Windows on a new PC with a 320 GB SATA hard disk.

Kubuntu and Ubuntu are already installed and work without any problem, so it doesn't seem to be the disk itself that is damaged.

However, when I boot from my Windows XP CD to install it, it does boot and starts checking devices, but then stops at a blue screen of death with:

STOP 0x0000007B (0xF78D663C, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

I can't even access the repair option to try to "fix" the MBR. :(

Any ideas what might cause this?

Have a look at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/324103

Also, more generally, Windows is better installed on a "clean" drive - that is one that is not hampered with other programs or operating systems. If you want Linux on the drive as well as Windows, it would be better to reformat the drive, install Windows and only then install another operating system.

Thanks for ansering. The problem were missing SATA drivers for my motherboard.

I used nlite to create a custom Windows installation CD containing the necessary drivers:

As for installing Windows first and then GNU/Linux, I already knew about that. :)

(altough it's not that hard to do it the other way around ;) )
