Windows XP Home update

Hello everybody I have a little problem. I have a licensed Windows Xp Service Pack 2 Home Edition and now my automatic updates are trying to install the Service Pack 3... but after the update downloads almost all files i receive an error that says " a device attached to the system is not functioning" after that it rolls back all the installation deleting all the files that it downloaded... what can i do? pls help me :(

To install SP3 successfully you need your computer to be free of malware - including viruses.

It is also advisable to disconnect all peripheral items such as printers, scanners - all external things that are plugged into the machine but not, of course, the monitor, keyboard and mouse.
