Bad Sector - unable to resize partitions

I've been trying to resize my Ubuntu partition the last couple days and have been using GParted to do this; each time I boot from the CD and finally load on to the GUI I have a little exclamation mark next to my Windows partition which says I have a bad sector on the hard drive.

I've no idea how any damage could have come to my hard drive which is covered in its laptop-like shell but GParted said to me that next time I run Windows to run a chkdsk /p /r (I think they were the commands anyway - if not, something similar to those) and that will recover any data and do its "thing", reboot a few times after this and I should be able to resize the partitions thereafter.

I have done this now and tried a second time earlier this week and still, I'm not able to manage my partitions using GParted.

I'm not quite ready to move on to using any other partition managing software as I trust GParted enough to stick with it - I doubt it's the software I'm using...

But, I have no idea what the problem could be. Why, after doing what I was kindly told by GParted, am I still not able to manage the partitions?

Is it that this bad sector has become a scar on my hard drive and I'm not ever going to be able to do what I want?

One thing though which I might mention is that when it comes to sectors, I'm quite nervous because I don't fully understand them. So I may just be retrying to do something which I'm never going to be able to do.
