There are signs of the volcano's last convulsions - piles of ash, strange twisted layers of solidified lava - but not the slightest rumble. There has not been one for years. As the locals say: 'He is sleeping. He won't trouble us.' But experts are now warning that the slumbering mountain's next stirring could produce an even more devastating eruption than the one that buried the cities of Pompeii and Herculanaeum in AD79Versuvius has been heavily monitored for decades , Naples harbour has been measured to be gradually shallowing in depth for the last 3 of them. There is a very large magma plume making its way up to the surface.........The plume is larger that the volcano itself....Before Mt ST Helen's blew , the volcano was seen to expand , before the cataclysmic wall collapse and subsequent explosive release of pressure ......The whole surrounding area is minutely rising , but particularly around the Naples harbour area ...At best it just could be a branch of the main vent that goes into the original vent ...Or at worst it could be the original plume that caused the Pompeii eruption is still rising ,and that was just a taster of what is to come It is a potential nightmare right at the heart of Europe...........Sat photo of the region Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
