Guest PC Eejit
Thought I'd have a dabble with Linux to see what the fuss was about. It didn't go well.1st installation attempt - (on a clean HD) - Installer just crashed without warning.2nd installation attempt - Installed, but was told my laptop screen was incorrectly configured (Xsystem or something was knackered). There was no obvious way of reinstalling the driver for the screen.I formatted the HD...3rd installation attempt - Clean HD again.......The installer just crashed again whitout warning.4th installation attempt - Installed !...Then it said my sound card's "module" had been disabled - huh?! Ok, how do I ENable it? Checked the help file - it said how to configure your sound card but nothing about modules being disabled.I am very, very, (very) unimpressed with Linux so far.....So unimpressed in fact that I formatted the HD and put Win2000 back on :DHas anyone else had any disasters with Linux? I wasted 5 hours of my life with all this carry on last night

mark2
I'm currently trying out Knoppix which is running on ramdrive and cd, on my laptop which is functioning fine so far, could even possibly run without a H/D.Laptops are usually very difficult to get to run Linux, but this is working fine. No need to disturb your partitions either You can download from :- http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html#mirrors must be worth a try to see if you like any flavour of linux
mark2
Another good thing about it pick up a virus or trojan reboot and its goneloaded to desktop in 1 min, access on the net slightly slower than running from within windows but quicker than I expected
mark2
Another bonus i can read all of my windows files from within Knoppix, and in another post elsewhere with no HD it will still boot and run.
