orangefingers Posted October 22, 2009 Report Share Posted October 22, 2009 To be honest I'm a long term Mac user so all this is new to me. I need help with a good antivirus malware piece of software. I haven't installed Windows yet but have a copy of XP, though may buy Windows 7.What's good that's free? Sorry to be cheap but I'm a student so am watching my money these days.I'm really unsure because I'm not used to using antivirus software and want to be safe. I was further confused because a chap on my Mac forums said "The great thing about UAC is you can turn it off too! As long as you have a little bit of common sense you can go anti-virus and anti-spyware free." Is this true - sorry to be a newb but .... well I guess we all were onceHe also stated that there have been "no real virus issues since Windows 95 so I shouldn't worry to much". Boris Posted October 22, 2009 Report Share Posted October 22, 2009 If not joking, he is very misguided :)The UAC advices first appeared in Vista, and have no equivalent in XP.For safety on-line you need a good Firewall (free ones are available from Zone Alarm, Agnitum, PC Tools, Comodo) and a reputable anti-virus (free versions are available from Avast, Anti-Vir, AVG, PC Tools) Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I will probably start with XP - as I have a copy and its supported on my University course. I heard good things about Windows 7 but they (uni) only support up to Vista (didn't hear good thing) and even then the way they talk it sounds patchy at best.Anyway - thanks again. But if you're only going to have one operating system, and you depend on it for your studies etc., you might be better starting off with tried and tested XP.
