eSATA and firewire conflict?

Recommended Posts

I installed a second eSATA hard drive and it works fine. But when I try to attach a DV camcorder via firewire, the program I'm using to capture the video - Premiere Pro CS4- freezes the whole computer.

I can have the camera attached and turned on with PPro open, but when I try to access the Capture window in Ppro, the program freezes.

Or I can have PPro open and the capture window open, and then when I attach the camera's firewire, the system freezes.

I looked in device manager and don't see any conflicts (no yellow triangles)

also, if I disconnect the new eSATA drive, I can connect the camcorder and capture video normally.

any tips on what might be happening and how to proceed?

thanks ~

This could be a power problem - the power supply unit is unable to offer enough current to operate all of the required devices simultaneously.

What is the power capability of your computer and how many extra devices are there (e.g multiple hard drives/other drives, USB/Firewire/eSATA)?

If you have, say two hard drives, try disconnecting one (not the "C" drive) and see if that improves things.

I reposted this question because I couldn't find this one anywhere - I finally clicked my name and found the previous post that way (?)

I can have either of the external hard drives disconnected and everything works fine- it's only when both externals are attached AND I try to use the firewire DV camcorder.

I'll try substituting my still camera via firewire

[update] My still camera attaches via USB. I was also able to attach a third HDD via USB - and they all seemed to work at the same time...
