Hard Drive dissapeared!!

Recommended Posts

Hi, to all, i write for first time in the forums and here is my problem: Before some days my laptop damaged and the company from which i bought it had to give me a new one. I kept the hard disk, and when i plug it to the new laptop ( same as the old one ) and tried to load windows XP BSODs appeared for all choices: safe mode, normal mode, last known configuration. I know that the hard disk works because i went to a friend's computer and plug it via usb cable and i saw my files and my partitions. I read somewhere to repair the system with installation cd. Here is the big problem: Installation cd does not find any hard disk!! I use the laptop to work for my school, and now i can't use my tools. Is there any solution to this kind of problem?

Thanks for your time.

To clarify - you have an old HardDrive from a previous laptop - you are installing it into a new laptop as a primary HardDrive and getting BSODs? Correct?

If the above is correct - this can be caused by the difference in systems and explains why your friend could access it via USB. The USB connection just views/edits the information and does not attempt to boot from the HardDrive. I believe your best bet would be to retrieve any information you need while it is connected via USB then format the HardDrive and reinstall Windows. It is possible (or rather has worked before) to write windows over the existing windows (causes a dual boot) retrieve the information that you need then format the drive. However, I do not think you will be able to use this as a primary HardDrive until you format it and reinstall Windows. This usually results from a dramatic switch in old hardware to new hardware (an AMD processor on one PC and Intel on the other etc)

If your Windows CD cannot find the HardDrive - I would suggest doing a low level format with a tool like FDisk (comes on the Ultimate Boot CD) to remove and recreate the partition.

If none of this helps either post back or PM me and I will see if I can help further.

Hi,

I read your query and this is the serious problem. Why don't you contact tech support people and solve all your issues becuase they are bound to do that as you laptop is still in the warranty period.

Thanks,

James
