Problem with a Windows 7 upgrade (from Vista)

I thought that I would try out the upgrade path from Vista.

I upgraded from the 64-bit version of Vista Home Premium to the 64-bit version of Windows 7 Home Premium.

I keep getting the dreaded Windows integrity check error message :( (below)

I don't remember seeing this when I used to run the BETA a few months ago

As if not being able to run programs that ran okay on Vista wasn't bad enough, I can't even update Windows :( (below)

I'm sure that the 2 problems are related.

p.s. I'm not moaning about Windows 7 as I know it's a brilliant operating system and the reason why I'm getting these problems is because I went for the upgrade instead of the clean install as I couldn't get Norton Ghost to copy my OEM Vista installation from the 1 TB drive that I'm using now to a 120 GB spare hard drive.

I wanted Vista on the 120 GB drive with Windows 7 on my 1 TB drive i.e. the drive that I'm using now after the 'upgrade' !

It should have worked as the 'image' size was only around 100 GB with compression.

Regarding the error message I get in Windows 7, after googling, I think it's to do with the UAC settings and so I tried to alter the UAC settings in the 'Action Center' but nothing happens :(

It looks like I'll have to go for a clean installation like I had with Vista when I installed it around 12 months ago!

When I first boot up Windows 7 I get the following error:

I've googled it and apparently the error is caused by a Vista upgrade from Windows XP.

That doesn't apply to me as my OEM Vista installation was a fresh installation not an XP upgrade

To prevent the "Invalid Product Key" error - this worked for me today on a friend's machine.

Follow the Windows 7 Install Wizard to install the operating system.

During installation, when prompted for a product key, DO NOT enter the upgrade version product key.

Unselect and untick the "Automatically activate Windows when I'm online" check box during the installation process.

After Windows 7 is installed, boot up to desktop, and manually enter the Windows 7 upgrade product key to activate online or activate via phone.

I wish I had known this as I did enter the product key on installation, however, I unticked the box that would automatically register online.

I decided to go back to the Vista installation using Norton Ghost and will go for a fresh installation at the weekend when I have more time as I have to make a list of my program settings, etc.

I was hoping to save time and effort by going down the upgrade route but it is no good and a fresh installation is best.

I think that the reason why I had virtually no hassle with the BETA version of Windows 7 was because that too was a fresh installation and not an upgrade.

In addition, I have had no trouble with this Vista installation and I think it's because I went for a clean installation.

I had no choice as my old PC with XP on packed in and so I couldn't go down the upgrade path even if I wanted to!
