'My Pictures' Captions

Yet another technological mystery for me!

The captions under all the folders in My Pictures are no longer visible.

However, when I place the cursor on any individual folder, the caption, date

and size appears.

What can I do, please, to restore the captions below each folder?

Welcome.

Just as a quick check. Right click on any folder. Choose "Rename" on the dropdown list and then type "Test" in the space below the folder.

Now left click in any blank space on the screen. Have you now got a folder called "Test" ?

Are the folders in My Documents / My Music displaying the same tendency ? (No Names)

What operating system are you using ? ( XP, Vista, Windows 7)

Hello MANEMAN. Thanks for the welocme and suggestions.

I have done as you suggested and renamed a Folder. However, when I left click on a blank space there is no folder marked test. But when I place the cursor on the renamed folder it does show Test - but not as a caption as previously.

I am using Windows XP.

I would appreciate any further help for this ageing non-techno!!

(Thanks for the update on the operating system that you are using)

A little bit tricky to diagnose without seeing it. - But here goes again.

Top left of the page when you are in "My Pictures".

In between "Favourites & Help" you will see - "Tools." Click on that and you get a drop down box.

Choose Folder options. General. - Click on: "Restore Defaults"

Now another tab: View - Click on: Restore defaults.

Has that set things up the way that they should be ?

If these hints are at the moment are not being very useful, it could be that you may well be guided towards something called " System Restore"

Which can sometimes get you back to a point in time when things were ok.

Try to remember a point in time when your present problem didn't exist. (Exact date if possible)

Dont be afraid to mention to friends, neighbours, or family that you have a problem with your computer. Whether you are 10 years old or 100 years old, forget your pride, and just say " I have got a problem, can you help ?"

You will be suprised just how many people will throw out their chests like a pigeon, and be willing to delight you, and demonstrate their skills. (Often a lot quicker than forums due to time lapse in answers)

Try the things I have said (Age is not a barrier with computing)

Anyone else on here got any bright ideas to help ?

Hello again MANEMAN.

Unfortunately your first suggestion didn't solve the problem. I'm a little cautious (too cautious maybe) of using System Restore.

Not sure if it's relevant but when I go to 'View' in My Pictures, Tiles, Icons, List and Detail all show the captions. Only when I open as Thumbnails (as I have done for years!) do they disappear.

Any other suggestion other than System Restore?

You should try System Restore. Some time in the future you may have a real bad problem, and if you can get to know how to use it now so much the better.

Possibly a windows explorer problem.

Try going to command prompt : Start > Run > cmd > Enter : and typing...

sfc /scannow

or, doubtfully but I guess it could be possible, a problem within the file structure?

Just to check anyway, if sfc didn't fix it, go to cmd again and type...

chkdsk /f /i /r

and you should be prompted to continue this on rebooting the computer so reboot it for now and let it doing its thing for a little while then see if it's working.

The only other thing I could possibly think of is either a .dll file problem or registry problem but don't go try using registry scanners for this because if anything, you'll be missing a key, not wanting to remove unused keys.

I'm talking about Thumbnails. MANEMAN. At least I think so! When I click Thumbnails under view, I see the Folders displayed with, maybe four tiny pictures from the folder displayed. The strange thing is, when I 'Browse' to add a picture as an attachment, for example, all the captions are there!

If you cannot get it sorted out, maybe you can post a picture (Screenshot) or two up here so that we can see exactly the difficulties that your are having.

At times a picture can write a thousand words. (Gotta be a lyric for a song there somewhere's ?) :D

Sorry I have not replied but we have been away for a few days.

BUT, I am delighted to report that, thanks to your help, the 'My Pictures' captions have returned to tgheir proper place. The sfc /scannow procedure seem to do the trick.
