setting external Hard Disk in read only mode

Hi All,

I'd like to temporarily set an External Hard Disk in read only mode. This is to avoid accidental removal of files when copying data from the HDD to other drives (MP3, other media devices and USBs).

I use the copy/paste function for this but if I were to accidentally use cut/paste instead without noticing, I'd risk losing the data as I then delete the data from the secondary drive when I no longer need it there.

(I suppose that you can still copy/paste data from a read only source whilst cut/paste is not permitted).

Can anyone tell me how to achieve this or some other similar solution?

Thanks

It can be done, but it's not simple. Here's one way: HACKSPC. But the easiest way is to be careful when doing the copying and recover from the Recycle Bin if you make a mistake. You can also open the show all folders pane and use drag-and-copy using the right mouse button. I find it might safer than using the normal copy function.
