i'm gonna be getting a new computer for christmas, and the one my mom is planning to get comes with 64 bit vista and has 8 GB of RAM

are there alot of compatability issues with a 64 bit windows?

i've been searching the web alot trying to find any info i can and i've came a few forums where some people have been saying they cant get amazon mp3 downloader to work with 64 bit windows 7 and one person said they sent a email to amazon regarding the issue, and amazon sent a reply back to them saying that the amazon mp3 downloader is not compatable with any 64 bit windows

but that person later said they were able to download the amazon mp3 downloader by running windows 7 in vista compatibility mode

does anybody here know about the compatibility with amazon mp3 downloader and 64 bit windows oporating systems?

or any other programs with compadability issues? i'm a little concerned...

Why not forget pre loaded commercial computers? Find a local shop and discuss your requirements with them. Tell them what you want the computer for and have one built to a spec that suits your requirements. Insist on receiving a full installation disc, and NOT a simple recovery disc. It won't come pre loaded with a dedicated version of Windows like a lot of the commercial ones do, and it certainly won't be loaded with a lot of rubbish and trials of rubbish programs that you don't want or need. Most important of all, it won't come pre loaded with rubbish like Norton. Prior to receiving it, download to a memory stick an installer for a firewall and Anti Virus program of your choice, so that you can put these in straight away before going on line. Go straight for a version of Windows 7 it is an excellent program. Again, go for the version that will suit your needs, no need to go the upgrade route. Personally, Windows 7 supreme 32 bit suits me fine. The choice is yours. Best of luck. :D :D :D

There are some but actually fairly few compatibility issues with 64 bit Vista or Win 7, for that matter. Most modern apps will run just fine on a 64 bit platform. Most of the problems relate to fairly old software.

I like Andsome's comment. Big brand computers have a lot of proprietary elements to them and getting a generic machine will be better in the long run. Having built a few 10's of thousands of generic machines over the years I can tell you there is no downside to them and a lot of upside. All of my own computers are built by me and they are better than anything a factory can churn out.

I'll give you a recent example. Somebody brought me an expensive HP workstation and wanted to upgrade it to a quad core processor from the single core processor it used. That required a mainboard change. You can't put generic mainboards in HP cases - at least not in this case. That meant trashing the case, mainboard, processor, memory and graphics card which used a proprietary mainboard slot. All we could salvage was the hard drive, DVD drive and the peripherals. Obviously, we didn't do it. We built a complete new machine. There wasn't much point in saving an old, used, small hard drive and DVD drive. If the machine had been a generic ATX machine, a mainboard and processor upgrade would have done the trick. Other things like memory upgrades would be optional, not mandatory.

Generic ATX machines are completely and easily upgradeable and serviceable. Parts are available and cheap. Finally, you are likely to end up with a higher quality machine at the same or lower price.
