This is the deal:

- computer boots normally

- when I click on desktop or menu to start an app, any app, one of two things happens

a. the entire screens "grays out" and the computer hangs up

b. the "hourglass" appears and seems to keep going forever

- apps will not start

- I ran f-secure online virus scan and it detected no viruses

- I ran Dell's start-up diagnostics from the DVD that came with the computer and everything came out fine, but of course this only appears to troubleshoot hardware and not software

- I have successfully run Comodo Internet Security Suite for 2 years but it seems to be deactivated and cannot be activated in Safe Mode

- computer works just fine in "Safe Mode with Networking" (other than audio), in fact I'm typing this using the computer

In short, what should I do to restore the Vista to "Normal Mode" functionality?

There seems to be nothing in the included Dell discs to troubleshoot Windows problems.
