Cannot Install Windows 2000

Hi, i have windows xp home and recently aquaired a windows 2000 disk from a friend. I want to install this on my computer whilst keeping windows xp and all my programs and files etc. Can i do this? Also when insert the windows 2000 disk a message comes up saying that the setup features will be disabled because i have an updated version of windows (XP) and i cant install windows 2000. Can anyone help me with this?

Use a Win98/Me Startup disk (with CD support) to boot your computer. If you don't have one, you can download the files to make a boot disk at http://www.bootdisk.com

Insert your Windows 2000 CD into the CD Rom drive.

At the A: prompt type X:\I386\WINNT.EXE where X: is your CD-ROM drive.

Proceed with the install. Install Windows 2000 to a different partition than XP is installed in.

Complete the Windows install. Allow the computer to boot into Windows 2000.

Repairing the Windows XP Boot Loader

Note: Some users have reported that Step 1 is not necessary, but in testing I found that it was. Since the C: drive is FAT32, you can use a 98/Me boot disk and skip Step 1, if you wish, but you may find that you need to do it anyway.

Boot your computer with the Windows XP CD. When prompted to Setup or Repair, choose Repair. In the Recovery Console, enter the following commands.

FIXBOOT, answer Yes

CD \

ATTRIB -H NTLDR

ATTRIB -S NTLDR

ATTRIB -R NTLDR

ATTRIB -H NTDETECT.COM

ATTRIB -S NTDETECT.COM

ATTRIB -R NTDETECT.COM

COPY X:\I386\NTLDR C:\

COPY X:\I386\NTDETECT.COM C:\

In Steps 9 and 10, X is the letter of your CD-Rom drive.

You have to backup NTLDR and NTDETECT.COM because the Windows 2000 versions will not boot XP whereas the XP version will boot W2K and XP. They are hidden system files in the boot drive. Copy them to a blank, formatted floppy, or other location that will be available after you install W2K.

Install Windows 2000 to a different partition than XP is installed in. You now have have W2K's NTLDR and NTDETECT.COM.

You need to repair the Windows XP Boot Loader. Boot into Windows 2000, not Windows XP. Insert the floppy disk that you used earlier (or access the location you used), to restore the XP NTLDR and NTDETECT.COM. Copy them to the root directory of your boot drive.

Now, you'll be able to restart your computer and boot into Win 2K or Win XP.

i have created a 98/me boot disk, but when i get to the stage where windows 2000 is just about to install, and just after i get the message about smartdrive not being installed or something, I get the following message:

"Windows 2000 requires a hard drive volume with at least 218 megabytes of free disk space. Setup will use part of this space for storing temporary files during installation. The drive must be on a permantly attatched local hard disk supported by windows 2000, and must not be a compressed drive

Setup was unable to locate such a drive with the required amount of free space.

Setup cannot continue. Press ENTER to exit."

What do i need to do to get past this? Please help!

The problem here is smartdrive. Copy smartdrv.exe to the start up disk. Smartdrive.exe is located

in c:\windows. (windows 98)

Then boot now from the start up disk choose Option 2 with CD rom support.
