savak
HiAs the title says I'm reinstalling Vista on a Dell Inspirion 1720. It's taking way too long. I get to 'Completing installation ...' quickly enough but after that it takes ages while the progress bar doesn't appear to get beyond about 75% across.Any ideas why it takes so long and what can be done to speed things up.Thanks
MANEMAN
Hi Savak, and a big back for 2010Is this a "Clean" install that you are doing from a "Windows Vista Install Disk" ?Or perhaps a re-install using the Dell "Back to Factory settings" / "Restore disk" ?If the former, please do make sure that the install disk is free from fingerprints, greasy smudges, or scratches, before trying to install. Before you go any further make sure that you have backed up all of your data. (Pictures, Music, Documents, etc; etc.)Come on back and let us know which way you are trying to re-install.John.
savak
Sorry about getting back so late!Yes it was a restall from the Dell disk and yes it was clean and data backed up.I tried several times to reinstall even leaving it overnight with no success, when I tried to install XP it reported no HDD, but then the HDD is SATA and XP may not have recognised it.I got Windows 7, fully licensed, and it installed straight off in about 40 minutes, so I don't know what the problem was. W7 seems happy enough although for The Simms game it reports hardware acceleration is not supported and there seems to be no driver to resolve the problem at the Dell suuport site. Sometimes we just have to live with short comings.Graeme
