Windows 7 XP Mode

I spent much of the night fussing with the Windows 7 XP Mode. The on line documentation suggests that if one installs the XP mode file followed by the Virtual PC 2007 file, the computer will know intuitively that XP is the guest O/S and basically set itself up automatically. It didn't work for me. Virtual PC has no clue about the existence of XP mode on the hard drive. It wants to set up a virtual machine manually and then load an O/S manually. That isn't the same thing as XP mode. Yes both the hardware (Phenom) and software (7 Pro 64 bit) are capable of handling XP mode in Windows 7. I verified the hardware with the little test program Microsoft provides on the site. I'm wondering if the solution is as simple as installing Virtual PC in XP mode folder. The documentation makes no mention of that but that might at least give Virtual PC a chance of finding the guest O/S. Ideas?
