Large files get corrupted when copied to a hard drive

Hello:

My system is Windows XP SP3 that has all the latest updates installed. I'm using an admin account without any restrictions. Recently I bought a brand new 1.5 TB hard drive that I installed as a secondary drive on my system. I formatted it as NTFS and started using it as a back-up data/video/sound storage.

Now recently I've discovered that a backup of my DVD (.iso file) when burned to a disc was not playing right. It took me quite a while to realize that when I copy a large file on to this hard drive it somehow gets corrupted. I don't know how and where but I can tell by using a third party file comparison software (Swift Compare) that simply states that two files are not identical right after I copy it from a good hard drive into this new one. I also need to let you know that this issue seems to be happening only with large files, for instance 7.3GB and such.

Is it something specific to Windows XP? To a hard drive? And is it possible to fix it?

Hi there, and Welcome.

I have noticed this myself when copy/pasting, or drag/dropping large files from XP to an external drive. Have never bothered to find out exactly what is going on though. It has been mainly .exe files that have either been missed or corrupted.

If I leave the process to my backup software ( ** I Use This ** ) No such corruption occurs. Similarly if I break things up into smaller chunks before transfer no missing files or corruption takes place.

John.

One thing to experiment with would be to use XCOPY, and see if this also occurs.

Another thing to try is to use the largest possible cluster size (64KB) instead of the default (4KB) for that external hard drive, especially if it is used to store mainly large files.
