Problem with Second Copy Software

This story is just in case other members of the forum who use Second Copy have met a similar problem (or perhaps have not noticed that it exists on their computer)

I have been a user of Second Copy for a few years (currently version 7.1) and thought that I had a reasonable knowledge of the programme. However, I have just upgraded my computer with new hard drives and Windows 7 64 bit and have run into some problems with Second Copy. Windows 7 64 bit was a clean install and not an upgrade so I had to import the previous Second Copy back up profiles from my old Windows 7 32 bit system.

Let me explain.

My computer has two hard drives - each having only one partition.

The C: drive is used for the O.S. and all programmes

The D: drive is used for all documents and data.

I run two Second Copy profiles at shutdown...................

WHICH FILES...The first profile backs up

C:/Users/User Name/ App data/Roaming/Microsoft/Templates

C:/Users/User name/Favorites

C:/Users/User name/Desktop

The second profile is set to back up D:/ All files and folders.

WHERE...Both profiles are set to back up to the same folder on an external eSATA hard drive.

WHEN...Manual at shut down

HOW....Exact Copy.

Advanced settings - "Try to copy files in use by other apps" and "Always copy empty folders"

The problem that has arisen is that when I run the first profile - the selected C: Drive "Users" files are backed up to the external drive OK. However - when I then run the second profile it deletes from the external hard drive the Users folder completely which contained the Templates, Desktop and Favorites files that were just backed up by the first profile - before proceeding to back up the files in its own profile. Thus I lose the back ups for Templates, Desktop and Favorites every time.

I fiddled with various settings like Simple Copy etc to no avail. What I am trying to achieve is to back up the selected additional and changed files on my C: drive and all the additional and changed files on my D: drive to the external eSATA drive. This to include removing from the back up drive any folders and files that have been deleted on the source drives.

I was sure that I was doing something wrong and perhaps was missing a tick box somewhere - but where...?

I eventually resorted to sending an Email to Second Copy to ask for their advice. Their reply came within 2 hours and they suggested that I should have two separate back up folders on the external drive ...thus

E:/Second Copy/Back Up/C drive/......

E:/Second Copy/Back Up/D drive/......

And raise a profile for each drive directing the back up to the appropriate folder. It worked perfectly and I am kicking myself for not thinking about it. However - although the problem is solved - it does not explain why my original settings worked OK over the past 5 years as I have migrated through XP, Vista, and Windows 7 32 bit. The problem has only reared its head on Windows 7 64 bit - but is now resolved.
