Problem with Search

I have recently upgraded to windows 7, i have been using windows for a long time now. I loved the old way in which winxp used to search without the indexing.

The new indexing process is very fast and effecient, but i am having a small problem while searching my external harddisks.

So here it is. I am having two external hardrives, one is WD and one is Seagate. When both of them are plugged in they are having the drives assigned to as H: and I: respectively. The previous letters are assigned to the various partitions of my hard disk and CD/DVD.

So the indexing is all done and i am able to search all the files very quickly and effectively. But when i unplug the external hard disk and plug only one harddisk say the Seagate it become H: Windows starts rebuilding the index, i can say it does as i have seen my external HD light blinking and also "Resource Monitor" shows that "searchIndexer.exe" & searchProtocolHost.exe" are running and doing R/W on the disk.

So the problem is that as i plug in my external HD it dynamically gets the Drive assigned, and this confuses the indexer. This is what i understand from my experience, what can be the solution for this, how can i assign a permanent Drive letter to both the external harddisks or device a way that the indexes on both these external HD dont get mixed up each time they are plugged in.

Due to this i am getting a lot of delay in search and unnessary spinning of my external HD.

Try this to make the drive letter(s) permanent:

Click on Start and then Control Panel.

Click on the System and Security link.

Note: If you're viewing the Large icons or Small icons view of Control Panel, you won't see this link. Simply click on the Administrative Tools icon and proceed to Step 4.

Click on the Administrative Tools link.

In the Administrative Tools window, double-click on Computer Management.

Once Computer Management is open, locate the Disk Management option on the left and left-click on it.

If the Disk Management option is not visible, look under the Storage option by clicking the small arrow next to the word Storage.

On the right-hand side of the screen, locate and right-click on the drive that you wish to change the drive letter of and choose Change Drive Letter and Paths....

In the Change Drive Letter and Paths window, click on the Change... button.

The Change Drive Letter or Path dialog box will appear.

Choose the drive letter you wish to assign to this partition by clicking the letter from the drop-down box on the right.

Click OK.

The Disk Management window that appears advises you that "Some programs that rely on drive letters might not run correctly. Do you want to continue?".

Note: If you have software installed to this drive, the software may stop functioning after a drive letter change. Nearly all software defaults to the primary drive though, so this is rarely a concern.

If you're sure you want to make this change, click Yes.

It doesn't hurt to have another search facility in place.
