hot-doc Posted February 25, 2010 Report Share Posted February 25, 2010 HiI have a dell dimension desktop (5 years old) that runs Win XP SP3(updated)Zone alarm firewall(always on)AVG free Antivirus ( updated and on)For nearly 2 weeks, it has hanged repeatedly in normal mode. Seems to work OK in safe mode (but obviously unable to use computer, itunes etc.)Tried to scan with AVG in safe and normal modes but nothing seems to work.Any suggestions?Thanks Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
MANEMAN Posted February 26, 2010 Report Share Posted February 26, 2010 Hi there, and welcome.Try first CTRL+ALT+DEL that will bring "Windows Task Manager" up for you.Click on the "Processes" tab, and look at "System Idle Process" CPU reading there should be in the high 90's with the computer at standstill (Just the desktop, no programs open)If it is not, then something is stealing CPU cycles.Scroll down and see what, if anything is using up the CPU.vsmon.exe in Zone Alarm or something associated with it's process can often be the culprit.Come back and let us know.John.
