SLOW Intranet speeds

Hello all! Hopefully someone can help me out with this issue.

I am trying to transfer a large amount of files from a Windows 7 machine onto a Windows Server 2003 machine. The files are mostly big, anywhere from 200 megs to a couple gigs (theyre videos). When I start the transfer, they go around 20-30 MB/s, which for a gigabit line is pretty pathetic, but I would still be OK with it. The problem is, after about a minute (almost exactly that everytime) network activity just drops, and the transfer rate dips under 2 MB/s for the rest of the transfer. The really strange thing is, when I try to transfer the files back from the server to my Windows 7 machine, the transfer rate is sustained around 60-70 MB/s, and never drops off of that. Something that took 4 hours to go up took about 4 minutes to come back down!

The server, with a gigabit NIC is directly connected to a Dlink gigabit router, and the windows 7 machine is connected to the router through a gigabit switch. The 7 machine also has a gigabit NIC. My first question is which machine has the problem, and then of course how do I fix this?

Edit: I also have all firewalls turned off, since most forums pointed to that as the problem, but it did not help. All drivers are also up to date

It sounds as though the man in the big box, who takes all those Megabyte parcals and put them into storage, is gradually having to spend more and more time finding odd corners into which he can push chunks of it.

The man in the little box seems to have no trouble in that direction.

In my simple Luddite mind a voice is shouting something which sounds like "defrag".....but I could quite easily be mistaken.

I dont think so, the drive they are going to is a 2.1TB RAID 5 partition that has about 15 gigs on it thus far.

Perhaps you could try right-clicking the folder(s) in manageable quantities and send them to a zipped file ready for transfer... :)

haha, I was grabbing the files about 10GB at a time, but to zip them all would be impossible. In total I am moving over a terabyte, so zipping would have taken forever. I shouldn't have to worry about the files, I just want to get the throughput to a reasonable level.

FIXED IT!

After testing file transfers on other systems/the system HDD in the server, I found the only common denominator was the RAID 5 hard drives. I found that the Write Back cache was not enabled, and when I turned it on, things started working fine. Im still unsure why disabling WB cache would cause the write speed to drop to < 2MB/s, but that seems to be the way it is.
