BretMan
Hello,I'm preparing for a migration from XP Pro to Windows 7. With all the XP files I have now, I have to be careful not to exceed the 256 character limit for the file path length, which is a problem sometimes when I want to store archives on an external drive to save space on my local drive.Does Windows 7 have a limitation on character length like in XP - if so what is it? Also, after I do the migration, will my existing XP files still be subject to the XP limitation or will they automatically adopt the Windows 7 limitation? Thanks! JessicaD
BretMan,Please note that when migrating from Windows XP to Windows 7 you will not have an "in place upgrade" option. You will however have the option to select "custom" install when prompted. The Windows 7 install process will then copy all of your data in "My Documents" over to a Windows.old folder within Windows 7 itself. All applications and documents stored in other locations will have to be reinstalled / transferred manually. ashleygon
I would recommend you to use the Long Path Tool. Even if there is a 256 character limit, you can migrate to windows 7 easily.
