I want to do this to conserve space on my boot drive by moving the desktop folder to another hard drive but windows needs to know where to look for this new folder of course. Belatucadrus Posted April 15, 2010 Report Share Posted April 15, 2010 Desktop icons are only going to be a few Kb of data at most, so moving the Desktop folder isn't really going to achieve anything regarding drive space. ɹəuəllıʍ ʇɐb Posted April 15, 2010 Report Share Posted April 15, 2010 I agree that the Desktop shouldn't use up much space, as it is not the place to store large files.However, if you really want to move your desktop, search the registry, and change all occurrences of %USERPROFILE%\Desktop to New Location\Desktop; I have just done that with My Pictures, and there are about a dozen places in the registry where to change it.
