Drive icon gone walkabout

Recommended Posts

Can anyone help?

Last week my drive icon for drive H disappeared in My Computer, so now it has just that funny little white document icon thing for when an application or document or drive isn't recognised.

It doesn't matter which external device (usually an external hard drive) is using drive H at the time, it's always missing the icon - although the devices actually work fine when acting as drive H.

I use Vista Home Premium on a Vaio FW computer which has been great since I got it about 10 months ago.

I've googled the issue, and done the properties > customize > restore default (folder picture), but it is still the same. I've also tried creating a key for it in the registry, but doesn't seem to work.

It doesn't seem to be a problem with a USB port as I did a test: temporarily partioned a small part of my main hard drive and called it H, and again it didn't have an icon.

Any help much appreciated.

In older versions of Windows there was a small utility called Tweak UI that would have done this repair for you. Vista and W7 don't have these but, there are some independent "tweakers" around which may do the job. I've not tried these and if you decide to do so, ensure you have a full system backup before you begin.

Just Google "vista tweak UI" without the quotes.
