Slow WinXP Startup despite SSD

Hi,

I have slow Windows XP start up times on my Intel C2D 1.6GHz laptop. I installed the Intel X25-M 160GB SSD (Gen2) but the start up process is still slow. During boot up after the Windows logo which goes away very quickly the screen goes black and often I can see the mouse cursor but nothing else - meanwhile the HDD light does not even go on - this happens for about 10-20sec and then the boot up process resumes.

I've also found that the shutdown is also slow. It takes forever for Windows to switch to the blue shutdown screen from the desktop even if I close all running apps before hand. Then the Saving your settings screen comes on and that takes a long time, all the while the HDD light hardly goes on.

I've tried getting rid of most start up programs, I've used TuneUp Utilities to clean up my registry file from errors, I have defrag and pre-fetcher turned off because I'm running an SSD. This is a new SSD and my applications start up very fast.

The system's also virus free - I've scanned it with Kaspersky, Avira and BitDefender BartPE boot disks (updated from the web) and still no success. I even installed this MS Hotfix

but I don't think it helped.

Quite often a disk cleanup with something like Ccleaner, http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner followed by a defragmentation works wonders on slow startups/shutdowns. May help speed up the workings of the computer as well

Thanks. I tried to use TuneUp Utilities Reg cleaner - and defraging the SSD won't help. I'll try your CC cleaner tip. I only really started having this problem since first using this machine with a new DSL router. I previously used Wireless broadband access via USB.

Remember Ccleaner first then defrag, not the other way round.
