Zoning the Desktop for Different uses

On the windows desktop it seems a good idea to have the ability to automatically zone areas for different uses.

For example:

I save a document I would like to use in the near future and don't want to go looking through countless files. So I save it to the desktop and the zoning option places the file in the corresponding place (top right)for word files.

I next browse the web and find a page of relevance, so I save a copy also, instead of being placed next to the other doc it is saved to another zone (bottom right) that I use for html docs.

Is there any software that can do this? What is the description of the process? Does anyone else think its useful?

I've seen this question asked numerous times and never seen a constructive reply (like this one is going to be).

I'm sure it is possible and I think if there was sufficient demand, someone would have published a method by now but, I've not been able to find one.

From my own point of view, it is rare that the desktop is visible on my computers - at boot up and that's about it until shutdown. I don't know if this is unusual but I tend always to keep a browser window open and then open programs from the taskbar or start menu.

Yep. I'm with you Pops. I have just got a nice picture of my dog on the desktop. - nothing else. The least left on there, the less there is to lose.

Stardock do something called "Fences". One of the versions is free.

Cheers for the link I'll give it a go...I should have crossed my fingers and written full version for free on the back!

Everyone uses computers differently, I'm constantly trawling for research and want to organise stuff to save time and simplify my work flow. It would be good to be able to use the app in folders as well, then you could drop a short cut to it in the task bar.

I've found the alternate way is to create a folder for downloads or whatever and create short cuts so you can just click and then return to the root.

Apparently it not too hot on windows7 or vista (luckily i'm XP)

If you are ever tempted to buy it for the $9.99 its a limited license for a year and is full of adware that sells their own products.

However the free one seems to work for me so i'll carry on and strangely doesn't include adware

As you quite rightly say, everyone uses their computers in different ways.

If you wish to speed things up, leave the desktop completely blank and have a look at the two links below. They, when used in conjunction will simplify the workflow, cut down on mouse movement, and give speed right from the keyboard.

EDIT: Although it states "Control Everything with the Numeric Keypad". The whole keyboard is brought into use. (Their headline, just a bit confusing.)

Interesting stuff...i'll have a go in a bit, looks like the old style computer input where you can dial in the menu and press enter to access but think will work pretty good.Thanks

I'm just struggling to comprehend my new ubuntu system...our old laptop was getting tired so i thought i'd give it a new engine...its very good makes it from power on to surfing in less than a minute and even told me the reason why it was getting tired...giving me the advice to back everything up and replace the HDD...so i've placed the OS on a PEN and it works perfectly at no risk if the internal breaks before i get a chance to put a new one in
