Initially networking bsod, now unknown

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I am running Vista SP2 on a Dell M1530. I began receiving BSOD a few days ago, complaining about bcmwl6.sys (wireless network driver ). Updating the driver had no effect, so Dell replaced my network card with a new one, new drivers, etc. The issue continues to occur but no longer mentions any specific files or drivers causing the bsod. Dell now recommends reformat or replacing the motherboard - I would like to stay away from this if at all possible so that I can save my applications and data. It is worth mentioning that I get this bsod at seemingly random times, but only when the wireless network adapter is turned on.

Please let me know if I can provide any other information at all, or if anyone has any suggestions.

My instinct tells me that there me be some conflicting service with the wireless adapter, but I have no idea what it could be...

Thank you so much in advance,

~Dimitry

You can find more information about the crash in the Event Viewer.

I looked at the Event Viewer and see nothing specific about this crash there. I looked at the timestamp of the minidump file from earlier today and found the messages in the Viewer saying there was an unexpected shutdown, looked back from there, and found no errors. Is there something specific to search for?

I'm really at a loss for options and could use any help possible.

Thank you.

Do you get an error message on your BSOD screen?

No - nothing specific that I can notice. It just mentions there may be some hardware or driver problem.

There is usually an alpha / numeric part in the report, e.g. 0x0000000A: IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

Do you see anything like this? If so, post back with the detail.

Dimitry, I can't open your zip files...

Maybe someone else can?

I just double checked them and seem to be able to open them from a different computer too. I have used a different application to zip them up this time. Please try it now...

Strange this is how random this error is. I have been using my computer for 2 hours straight now with no problems. Occasionally some other times I get disconnected from my router (DLink) but can reconnect if I unplug the router and plug it back in. In the worst case, I get a blue screen and auto-reboot.

I received 2 more bsod tonight, in a row pretty much. I managed to take a screenshot with a cell phone camera and am attached the images here...Please let me know if this helps.

My laptop was on for about 20 hours with me using Firefox, MS Outlook, Windows Media Player actively before the first bsod. After restart I opened Firefox and Outlook to try to post this from the laptop, but got the bsod as soon as they opened, seconds after the computer turned on.

All the knowledge found on Google for this error points to hardware driver errors - as seems to have been noted by Dell. It may not be the driver for the network driver but something else where Windows is being very unhelpful by not telling you what it is.

What I would do in your circumstances is make a full backup or clone of your system as it is now followed by a repair install see http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial148.html - follow the procedure carefully.

Thank you for the advice. This is not an ideal solution, so I will experiment for one more day and then try this repair install on Sunday if I make no other progress. If that doesn't fix the issue, Dell is sending a technician with a new wireless card (even though I just got a new one), and a motherboard on Monday.

Please let me know if you can think of anything else!!
