microphone was working until I used skype

Using xpwindows, toshiba satellite

My microphone used to work great (headset) but when I started using Skype yesterday, the micrphone worked and after 5 minutes just failed.

It stopped working (nobody could hear me) but then worked again using other software. I tried to use skype again because I thought it was ok and now it has stopped working altogether (other software not working either).

The same headset does still work ok on another computer so nothing wrong with headset.

I re-installed the sound driver (I presume this controls micrphone too) but still no good.

I may try and re-install windows, does anyone have any other ideas ?

Does your Skype system have its own handset?

I'm not familiar with Skype as such but, a similar system I used once took over the audio section of the computer it was loaded on to so that everything sound-wise was channelled through the phone hardware. Each time I changed it back, the phone once again took it over when used.

Needless to say, I took the phone back to the supplier and obtained a refund.
