Microphones won't work on my computer...

I got my computer last year and ever since i got it microphones will not work on it. i've tried regular and usb microphones in fact i just got a webcam with a built in microphone and the camera works fine but it couldn't install the mic driver. Also whenever i go into sound settings in the control panel it tells me that windows has to shutdown. Does anyone know how i can fix this?

Have you looked in "Device Manager" to see if anything is amiss under "Sound,video and game controllers"?(Realtek High Definition Audio)

Also,try this:Right-click speaker icon in system tray>select "Recording devices">Right-click "Microphone">Select "set as Default Device",or "Set as Default Communication Device".

A repair install of W7 would probably fix this issue.However,it would be best if we rule out other options first.
