USB CardBus Adapter on Win98

I'm trying to add USB support to an old notebook of mine. I bought a 4-port USB CardBus adapter, it's sort of a generic card from China - the label just says "CardBus USB 2.0". Anyway, I'm having trouble getting it to work in Windows 98SE. The drivers were supposed to be included in the operating system, and when I plugged the card in it recognized it and tried to install the drivers. It shows up in the device manager like this:

Universal Serial Bus controllers
    USB Root Hub
    USB Root Hub
    VIA Tech 3038 PCI to USB Universal Host Controller
    VIA Tech 3038 PCI to USB Universal Host Controller

And that should work, since there aren't any yellow exclamation points. But I also get this:

Other Devices
    PCI Universal Serial Bus

complete with those lovely yellow exclamation points, along with this message under Device status:

The drivers for this device are not installed (Code 28). To 
reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver.

Of course reinstalling the driver doesn't do anything, I have it search automatically on the Windows 98 setup CD and it just says "Windows was unable to locate a driver for this device."

Do you know where I can find the driver for this? I checked VIA's website and just found patch, which didn't seem to help.

You could give DriverMax a go.Free version lets you update/install 2 drivers a day.If you don't want it in your Startup configuration,remove it from list and keep an eye on it for it tends to creep back in whenever it is run.

As far as I remember, there are no USB2 drivers compatible with W98 of any version, USB1 only came in with W98SE.

I just had the exact same issue with a 4 port usb pcmcia card (china) in an old win98 laptop Del latitude XPI. Found that it was working but 5VDC wasn't getting out to the USB ports. My card had 4 usb ports with a power jack in the middle. I put 5VDC into the jack, center terminal positive, and it worked. USB mouse lit up and started working. I had a 5 VDC power supply but if you don't you can pirate the power from a nearby desk top usb port if they supplied a usb to power jack cable with the card. The next step is trying to get a USB flash drive working in it. I hear that will be difficult with Win98.
