openletter
Post Numero Uno:I've got Win98 on a 350 mhz P2, 64 mb of ram. On Christmas eve of last year, Windows went belly up for no reason and nearly every program was corrupted. I've gotten pretty much everything that will work working again, but one thing that won't work again is Windows Media Player 6. I installed it and it plays a few file types, but when it comes to the Windows Media type, it says "Downloading Codec" for a while and then says "Your security settings do not allow you to download the codec." I configured my Internet Security Properties and my firewall so they were wide open, but it still gave me the same error message. I do not want to upgrade since the newer version probably won't work on my slow computer. (Also, the new version spys on you.)Additionally, the pugin for WMP crashes IE every time it is invoked. Redhat
May I suggest using something such as Winamp 2.91 instead? It will do the same things and will work. No spying involved either ;)http://classic.winamp.com/download/If you arn't open to this option, I'll try my best to attack your problem! Agent Smith
Another thing to try, is to download WMP6 agian from microsoft Available Here and try to reinstall it. Then run your windows updates to make sure it is fully patched. The above link is for WMP 6.4Also, if you use any kind of proxy service, this article may be of some help. M$ KB284852You could also try to source and download the codecs manually, then install them yourself. And finally, from your post On Christmas eve of last year, Windows went belly up for no reason and nearly every program was corrupted. I've gotten pretty much everything that will work working againI have to guess that after your mishap last Xmas, you have tried to repair your setup. Whilst this is very commendable and highly self satisfying, I would have to wonder whether it may be time to bite the bullet and start afresh with a clean installation of Windows. Especially if you still cannot get all your software working properly.Regards. Mr. Mouse.
Guest Travis86
Ok, this board is really weird. I sign up as Travis86, then post something expecting an e-mail when I get a reply. Not only do I not get an e-mail, I find that the user Travis86 no longer exists and my post appears to be posted by "openletter". Oh, well. I re-registered, and I'm back.I tried reinstalling WMP 6.4, but that didn't help. It still didn't have the codec. (You'd think WMP would come with the WMV codec, but apperently it doesn't.) Fortunately, I found a codec installer on Microsoft's web site. It even has the WMV 9 codec for WMP 6.4. Everything works great now.I assume that WMP 9 will spy on you, but WMP 6.4 with the WMP 9 codec won't. Right?
Agent Smith
I assume that WMP 9 will spy on you, but WMP 6.4 with the WMP 9 codec won't. Right? Not 110% sure, but I don't think you get spied on with the codec.Sorry about the hic-cups with your joining, but the Forum has been having some glitches with it's user database recently whilst some upgrades were occuring. Still all's well that ends well, and you now have your media player working.Mr. M.
