Bennett Gale
I'm trying to install Windows XP onto a portable hard drive, but it automatically installs the boot loader onto my other drive. Is there a way to choose where it installs the boot loader so I can install it on the portable HDD and boot from any computer? I can't unplug the other drive though, as doing so would void my warranty. (I have one of those warranty void stickers on the case). Thanks. -pops-
I doubt that it can be done.During install and setup XP searches for installed hardware to be able to identify the machine it is being installed upon. XP does not permit disk only installs.
ɹəuəllıʍ ʇɐb
I believe the boot loader is always in the first partition of the first HD.
Gram Smith
Boot loader is used by ROM.So it is necessary for a computer to store in boot program on device on motherboard, That's why it's not possible on portable device.
Seshomaru Samma
I think you can do it by installing an alternative boot loader You will need to install a minimal version of linux (50MB ,something like puppylinux) into a partition on your external harddrive and use the Linux bootloader 'Grub' to boot into Windows
