How do you choose where Windows XP installs its boot loader?

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to install Windows XP onto a portable hard drive, but it automatically installs the boot loader onto my other drive. Is there a way to choose where it installs the boot loader so I can install it on the portable HDD and boot from any computer? I can't unplug the other drive though, as doing so would void my warranty. (I have one of those warranty void stickers on the case). Thanks.

I doubt that it can be done.

During install and setup XP searches for installed hardware to be able to identify the machine it is being installed upon. XP does not permit disk only installs.
