PCkoRn Posted October 21, 2010 Report Share Posted October 21, 2010 I formatted my hard drive and installed windows XP, an older version...SP1. I only installed my ethernet driver so i could get on internet and started to do windows updates. I went to update site and it opened but there was no message 'checking your computer for latest......', that portion of the screen was blank and never loaded. So, I enabled auto update and let it start. It started d/ling and installing 3 updates. I had to restart my computer and once up an running again. updates didn't start again. So i tried going to the update page directly, and instantly a 'page can not be displayed' message comes up. I mean the computer didn't even think about it. just and immediate message. so i went to microsoft.com,'page can not be....' anything microsoft won't come up. so i tried yahoo.com and it came right up, all other sites worked fine.I tried installing all other drivers to see if it was an issues with updates not having sufficient driver, but no go. I even tried uninstalling the updates and still no luck. I am assuming the updates altered my registry or something like that. Unfortunetly, i just formatted so i don't have any restore points. I have researched a little and found i might need to update my windows update DLL....?.? This sound right?I about to just give up and format the hard drive again. PCkoRn Posted October 22, 2010 Author Report Share Posted October 22, 2010 I found out its my chipset driver. The computer seems to be working fine without it. THis seems like something that is essential for smooth functioning of the computer. Will it be ok if I don't update this driver?I even went to the manufacturers site and they have a newer version but I think thats the one that is mesing up my system.Should i just leave the older driver?Thanks again.
