As I have encountered some virus infections (that I was able to get rid of via malwarebytes) or software errors in the past I noticed that I never seem to have the option of a system restore. Sometimes theres a system restore point just from prior an installation on the same day but never a few days back - let alone a month. I do have the latest servicepack installed so I'm wondering if that actually disabled automatic restore points? From what I know my settings are all correct. Thanks for any insight or suggestions. -pops- Posted October 22, 2010 Report Share Posted October 22, 2010 I recall that System Restore in XP did not function for more than a day or so if there was more than one hard drive (or partition) installed. Dencandy Posted October 27, 2010 Report Share Posted October 27, 2010 System Restore, at least in XP and beyond, is not adversely affected by the number of partitions on the hard drive, in fact it automatically creates a SR sector on all internal partitions - but not on external hard drives.To find out about your own personal settings open the System Restore interface and click on System Restore Settings (it's on the left). That will tell you whether SR has been dissabled & how much space is allocated to it on each partition.Some malware turns off System Restore, so if you have had viruses that may be the cause.Also if you delete a file from a System Restore point (which anti-virus programs often do) it will usually render that Restore Point inoperable.After carrying out a virus or malware clean-up it is often advisable to immediately delete all your Restore Points by turning it off in the SR Settings interface. This is because a lot of malware can re-install itself from a Restore file even after you AV utility has "deleted" it. Then restart your computer unconnected to the internet, then set System Restore back on again, reconnect to the internet, and immediately create a restore point manually.After a few hours check that SR is back on again, and check this periodically.
