Disk Check

I wasn't sure where to post, so hopefully this is the right area. I've been having problems with my computer for a while. At first, it was just a 'wuaucult.exe' error popping up every so often, but then it became more and more frequent. Just the other day, all of a sudden I cannot delete or install any programs. I get an error that reads "(file name) cannot be deleted it is corrupted and unreadable." Now it even says that when I open a program that has been on the computer since day one. I did a system recovery, which did fix my 'wuaucult.exe' problem, however, the 'corrupted and unreadable' error is still being a nuisance. I've scanned many websites looking for a solution, none of them are yet to succeed. The computer itself keeps telling me I need to do a "disk check." Whenever I restart my computer it does a countdown to perform disk checking, but it always cancels on its own. When I try to run it manually whether going through My Computer or the Command Prompt, the disk check will not run. This computer is my life-line and I have exhausted all my known options. Hopefully someone here can offer assistance, any input that could help resolve my situation would greatly be appreciated. Thank you.
