Windows XP Install Problems

I have a desktop that I am attempting to install Windows XP on. It is currently running Ubuntu Linux. I am attempting to do this with a bootable Windows XP Professional Install CD. The desktop boots just fine with the current hard drive, no issues whatsoever. However as soon as I pop in the Windows XP Install CD and boot off of the CD it will not install because it says it can not detect any Hard Disk Drives on the system. I am at a loss and can't find anything on google.

That would work just fine except that the Windows XP Install disc doesn't detect the hard drive at all. It exists and works fine. Linux will boot off of it just fine but when you boot off the xp cd it doesn't see the hard drive. I don't necessarily need to keep linux on the drive either just a fresh install of xp and I'll be pleased. I just can't figure out how to get it to install if it can't see the drive.

Did you first create space on the hard drive for XP by resizing the main Ubuntu partition ?

The two O/S use different file-systems.

What is the layout of your HD? Do you have a spare partition for your XP install?

Without trying the above mentioned I have a feeling it won't work. I took another hard drive that works fine it its own system and has xp pro installed on it and nothing else and put it in to this system and the xp install did not see that hard drive either.

I think an additional HD must first be recognized by the BIOS.

Boris has suggested that you use the Linux GRUB bootmanager to make space for Windows on your drive.The partition created for Windows must be formatted with a system that Windows can use.Otherwise nothing is recognized.The two OS do not use the same format.

If you want a clean install of XP,I suggest you completely wipe the drive of all data and format said drive (fully) with a system that Windows can recognize.If there are no additional issues with the drive,you will end up with the most optimal environment to house Windows.

I have also been advised here that it would be most beneficial to boot the the two OS from different HDD.;)

I haven't had the chance to put this to the test yet because I need to get a complete grip on the GRUB manager.The only other drive I have is external and is already bootable.
