xboryce
Ok so here is my issue. My computer works perfectly under normal working circumstances (word processing and internet) but whenever I do anything that taxes the system more, it crashes. The more system usage, the faster it seems to crash. I can watch DVDs for an hour or two, while intense games like Crysis crash after around 30 minutes. My computer's current specs are:Processor - AMD Athlon 6400+ with Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro CPU heatsink/fan (installed using Arctic Silver 5 thermal compound)Motherboard - Asus M2R32-MVP Crossfire ready MoboPower Supply - ULTRA 600 watt non-modular PSURAM ( 4 GB ) - 2 GB (2x1GB) OCZ Reaper Duel Channel RAM (PC2 6400) 2 GB (2x1GB) Mushkin Duel Channel RAM (PC2 6400)Hard Drive ( 660 GB ) - 160 GB Western Digital S-ATA HDD (7200 RPM) 500 GB Western Digital S-ATA HDD (7200 RPM)Graphics Card - HIS ATI Radeon 4850 (512MB DDR3 VRAM)DVD-ROM Drive – Philips S-ATA CD/DVD reader/writer with LightScribe Also installed is a memory card reader with USB slotOperating System - Windows 7 Prof. 64 bit.As you can see, the hardware is definitely capable of running graphics intensive programs so its not that my specs aren't good enough, and I recently updated my drivers/BIOS and the problem persists. I also removed the 2GB of Mushkin RAM because that is known to cause issues with the 2GB of Reaper RAM (for some reason, the computer bluescreens upon waking up if it is put to sleep. It didn't before the Mushkin was installed and stopped when the Mushkin was removed, but thats not the issue right now) and anyways, the computer still has issues with the display without the two different memory brands in it. I also ran malware scans, removed temp files, and removed any old programs I don't use to try to reduce any chance of incompatibility issues. The problem persists. The computer originally used 2 Radeon 2600 cards in crossfire but at least one of them burned out causing me to upgrade to the 4850. Additionally, the computer originally booted both Windows XP 32bit and Windows Vista 64bit. The computer had the same issue with crashing with the old graphics cards and operating systems (I upgraded to the 4850 mainly because I thought it was because of heat damage to one of the 2600 cards, but that doesn't seem to be the case because both cards experience failure during games). Another step I took with the XP and Vista was reformatting the C drive, but the problem always came back. I haven't tried a reformat with Windows 7 but I'm not sure if it would help if it didn't before. So with this information can anyone help me remedy the situation? I'm led to believe it is either a RAM issue because my memory already does some funky things, or a GPU issue, maybe my 4850 is damaged?-my computer used to overheat a few months ago and I had to replace the case's stock fans so maybe the heat broke something? Here is the error notification I get when the computer restarts after it crashes:Problem signature: Problem Event Name: BlueScreen OS Version: 6.1.7600.2.0.0.256.48 Locale ID: 1033Additional information about the problem: BCCode: 50 BCP1: FFFFF880090450A8 BCP2: 0000000000000000 BCP3: FFFFF8800461D0B9 BCP4: 0000000000000002 OS Version: 6_1_7600 Service Pack: 0_0 Product: 256_1Files that help describe the problem: C:\Windows\Minidump\123110-39312-01.dmp C:\Users\Bryce\AppData\Local\Temp\WER-61542-0.sysdata.xmlAny help would be great, and thank you for your time. Makcalable
Have you ran memtest86 if not run at least 3 or 4 times. If you are having issues with your RAM as you say then replace the RAM but with the same make, it might supprise you with that being the main issue here. not good having to different makes of ram. ;)What AV you using?I take it you have covered all the basisc checks HERE ? MANEMAN
Hi there. It sounds as though you may have a corrupt driver. To find out more you will have to read the mini-dump.Download and install Blue Screen View This will offer some assistance as to the reason for the crash (BSOD)John. xboryce
I ran Windows memory diagnostic and it didn't find any errors. I also removed my old driver and reinstalled the latest version from AMD's site. I ran chkdsk on my C partition and it didn't do anything that I saw but I don't know what to expect from that. I've done everything from the link that Bugsy posted. The RAM are the same speed and slot type, just different brands-would that still make problems? I took 2 sticks out and ran the computer with only one type in and it still blue screened so I don't know if that is what is causing this. MANEMAN
This could be a driver fault anywhere on the system. - Not neccessarily graphics. If you run "Blue Screen View" it will allow you to look at all mini-dumps stored so far when there has been a Blue Screen (BSOD). Usually it will lead you straight to the problem.Hope you get it sorted.John.
xboryce
Alright. I ran Blue Screen View and it highlighted 2 files: dxgmms1.sys and ntoskrnl.exe . Do you know what this all means? each highlighted file has a page of other data about it and I don't know what to do from there.
MANEMAN
O.K. It's running a bit late now (Past 3.30am !) and I've been doing a bit of research to find out the best way to guide you. "dxgmms1.sys" as a possible culprit could just be DirectX playing up.But also it could be your graphics card or associated drivers (Yep I know you've already changed the drivers)It may be worth diagnosing or even uninstalling and reinstalling DirectX.Here are 2 Links to help you with diagnostics:/>http://www.itechtalk.com/thread1216.html/>http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Diagnosing-basic-problems-with-DirectXHere is a link to a free DirectX uninstaller: http://www.toggle.com/lv/group/view/kl48142/DirectX_Uninstaller.htm#Do try running the computer with no attachments in the USB ports just in case a USB peripheral is intefering in any way.If all of the above fail to cure the problem I would be looking at changing the graphics card.John.
