NET Framework help needed

Hello, wondering if anyone can help. It's a bit long-winded but I'll try and be concise.

I'm trying to install some s/w and it needs Net Framework present to install. No probs, I have Net Framework, so I ran the install and it came back with thousands of errors (example at end of post). I checked this out and saw the installation was running Net Framework v4. I checked the Regsistry and the only entries are for v1.0 to v3.5. Then I downloaded NET Version Detector which showed that 3.5 is installed but not 4.0 (it shows 4.0 in red). I checked Add / Remove Programs and that only went up to 3.5 also, it did not show v4.0

Then I checked the NET Framework directories and saw that 4.0 has its own directory.

I've never downloaded anything 'manually' from Microsoft, everything on my PC has come from automatic updates.

So I don't know what's going on - why is v4 present in the directories but not 'operational' (?). I don't know whether it should be installed or not, and if so, why (and when!) it failed. I'm also not clear on why the s/w is trying to run 4.0 if it's not installed.

Unfortunately I can't really give info about the s/w as it's a beta version, although all other beta users have had no problem.

So I guess I just want to know which Net Framework is the current one, and I want to get rid of the others completely? Or is any framework current, do I need to compile one or something? Sorry I don't know much about this side of things!!! Anyone got any advice?

I'm on Win XP Home, SP 3, patched fully up-to-date

Hi there monkeyman

No problems are usually related to the install/uninstall of Dot-Net.

Download and install the free version of RevoUninstaller. http://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_uninstaller_free_download.html

Uninstall in the "Advanced Mode" what you have got so far in Dot-Net versions.

That is going to leave your computer in a "Dot-Netless state."

Manually search (Google) for what you think you need, or what your computer may by balloon tips tell you is needed/required -

-Download and "save". - (All versions is a good idea. - Use Commonsense and download from a reputable source.)

9/10 you will start a piece of software and it will tell you - ".Net blah, blah,blah" - is required for this software to run.

Install as required. - If the software runs.......... You've got the correct version.

If you dont require it. - Dont install it !

Job Done.

s/w = Software I would imagine ?

If it's software in beta that you are talking about, surely you must realise that the software vendor is awaiting your feedback ?

Whether someone else has experienced problems with the software in development or not is irrelevant.

You are having problems. It is your job to report back those problems.

That's what beta is all about.

Thanks for the reply, I'll check out that uninstaller and try and fresh installation. I did try MS repair option but that didn't help. Just a bit wary of the second bit as I'm not totally clued up on what to install, and because I work from home with some really short deadlines I don't want to get into a state where my existing programs stop working because I've uninstalled something. But I'll check it out anyway and see what I can do.

And yes, I did report the problem to the vendors in a Defect Report with full information, but because it appears to be a .NET problem first and foremost, I thought I'd post here for advice also.When I said I couldn't give info I meant I couldn't do so here, because of the NDA.

Gotcha Man. :)

Uninstalling/ reinstalling Dot-Net's is not gonna give you any major headaches believe me.

If a Dot-Net is required a program will soon tell you that it is needed.

If you have them all downloaded and saved on your disk it's only a five minute job to install them as required, and have any particular program up-and-running again. That way you haven't got the brainrush of having to worry about versions.

Like I said: If you've got the wrong version you will soon receive notification.

Due to the nature of beta software you can never be quite sure of what sort of DLL conflicts you may encounter.

I try beta software primarily on a clean-install system before letting it run riot on anything I consider important, due to instability it can display in some situations.

Virtual machines are good for this. A Disk Imaged Operating System a must if not going virtual.

Cheers, I'll give that a go at the weekend and get rid of all the existing versions. Just for my own benefit, though, I'm not 100% clear about the when a version is installed and when it's not. What I mean is that I've now got v1, 2, 3 and 3.5 showing as installed. Is this right, can they all be installed and if so, is only one 'operative' how do we know which it is? Does different s/w use different versions? Also, v4.0 files are there but v4.0 is not actually installed, e.g. not in the registry - how would this happen? Probably stupid questions but I'm curious.

I know what you mean about people not getting back to you! I help out on an art forum (I'm an illustrator) and about a third of people who ask questions never even post to say thanks to people who've taken time to answer.

I got all the .NETS as well.

They all installed as needed and it woud seem that the latest version is the only set to automatic as a startup service.The others are set to manual.The services ares started when called upon by various software you put in use.

You may verify this by starting your task manager and clicking on show all processes or some such thing.

Open some old software that asked you to install these older versions of .NET.Or an old application.You may have to browse....

Watch your Task Manager for which version is invoked.This is tedious sleuthing for sure.So be patient and grab a cup of jove.Or whatever....

Hmm... downloaded the Revo uninstaller and like the others, it says that v4.0 is not installed. Which might be true, because although the files are there there's nothing in the Registry. So that's fine, but it's weird that the s/w I'm running actually uses it, and knows to use it, if it's not actually installed. I guess that's something I'll have to find out from the vendors (although I have asked and I don't think they know)
