JTP Posted February 20, 2011 Report Share Posted February 20, 2011 I'm having a problem with one of my XP machines that I have never experienced before and despite much searching around, I can't find anyone else who's had a similar problem.The problem is this: no matter what I do, the "move pointer to default button in dialogue boxes" option stays on. The option in the mouse settings box appears to function normally - I can check and un-check the option and click OK or Apply, and it will stay checked or un-checked - but either way, the computer acts as if it is enabled all the time. It's getting pretty annoying. Anyone have any idea how to fix this? Let me know if any more specific details about the system in question would help.Thanks for looking. It's a Dell Dimension 4300, Pentium 4, running XP Pro SP3. It has had this problem since Windows was re-installed when I put the hard drive in. It is only used a couple of times a year to run timing software for a model car race that I help out with - not for daily use - so it is only ever connected to the internet to do Windows updates. Therefore, I don't think viruses or interfering software are causing the problem. The only software that it has on it is the race timing software, Office 2000, Acrobat, and nVidia graphics control. Digerati Posted February 20, 2011 Report Share Posted February 20, 2011 If you uncheck the option, then hit Apply and exit the Control Panel, then open the Control Panel mouse applet again, is the setting still unchecked?You might try rebooting after you select and apply the option. JTP Posted February 21, 2011 Author Report Share Posted February 21, 2011 Yes, I have clicked "Apply", and closed the settings and control panel, and it remains unchecked when I come back to it and/or reboot. I have also looked at the value in the registry for this setting, and it appears to be turning on and off normally when the setting is changed in the control panel. I don't know what else to try. I have never used this feature on any of my computers and now on this one, having my mouse pointer jump around by itself is a nuisance. I actually did find someone else who had posted a similar problem on another forum somewhere, but he managed to solve his by updating his mouse drivers. I have tried around 5 different mice, both USB and PS/2, different types and brands, and there's no difference. I didn't install any mouse software/drivers, I'm just using mice that work natively.
