-pops-
The latest versions of Windows do have a very large number of drivers either pre-installed or readily accessible from MS.I think all of the accessory hardware I have was found and installed automatically when plugged into my W7 computers. It is only basic drivers, though, and if you need the fancy bits for your printer (or whatever) you require the manufacturers software as well. Digerati
Windows does have built in drivers - lots of them. And as -pops- stated, Windows 7 has a many too. The problem is, there are 1000s of products designed to run on Windows. If Microsoft included drivers for all of them, Windows would come on many disks and be many times larger than it already is. So Windows (like Linux, BTW) has generic drivers for most devices that allow the devices to run in "default" modes. To take advantage of any added features, you load the specific drivers. Note that earlier versions of Windows, before Plug n Play, did contain drivers for specific hardware. It was a nightmare for Microsoft, and consumers.
