"Windows Media Player Has Stopped Working"

My Windows Media Player 12 gives me the error message, "Windows Media Player Has Stopped Working", anytime I try to open its Video Library, or play certain AVIs. I don't have any problems with the other Libraries. I have to remove any search location from its Video Library to keep it from producing this error message. I have tried turning this feature off and then turning it on but that does not help. I have tried ever potential 'fix' I have found but nothing has helped. I understand that since WMP12 is embedding in Win7, there is no way of uninstalling it and reinstalling it as if it were a separate program. I'd appreciate any advise anyone might have. I think it might have something to do with codecs but I don't know where to start if that is the case. It does play some AVIs but other AVIs will produce the error message.

Thanks, Gary

Yes, it may be something to do with codecs. Install a new set from http://www.codecguide.com/download_kl.htm

If that doesn't work then a repair may be necessary. Have a look at http://www.thewindowsplanet.com/869/how-to-uninstall-reinstall-windows-media-player-12-windows-7.htm
