archolman
Can I install & run XP-SP3 on a neighbors old Compaq PC - AMD -K6-2 with 64Mb RAM - & do useful work in a reasonable time? He mostly uses it for photo-viewing, simple editing & storage.
Boris
The minimum hardware requirements for Windows XP Home Edition are: Pentium 233-megahertz (MHz) processor or faster (300 MHz is recommended)At least 64 megabytes (MB) of RAM (128 MB is recommended) You do meet the MINIMUM spec, but with only 64MB RAM in that rig you will be continually writing to/reading from the Page File.It should be as speedy as watching paint dry :D
archolman
Thanks Boris, It's what I thought, & will advise him that he's already got the best he can get on his box!
Digerati
Useful work? Yes. In a reasonable time? Probably not, not with 64Mb of RAM, and especially if you plan to network this computer as then it will require a suite of security applications - firewall and anti-malware solution, and they consume lots of RAM too. In any event, with only 64Mb of RAM, the OS will constantly be banging on the hard drive's page file. That's not only extra wear and tear on the drive, it slows down performance more. And if it uses on-board graphics, then you will even have less of that 64Mb as some will be snagged for the graphics.
