Joe G
Here is my problem:I recently assigned up for Carbonite Online Backup and paid for a full year subscription and now realized that only the files from internal hard drives are able to be backed. Almost all of my files that I want to back up, of course, reside on the external hard drive. I'd move them to the internal but that is going to almost fill the entire drive, which is housing the operating system, and what is the sense in having the external then? Is there a why to make the operating system think an external hard drive is an internal? Short of buying a new internal or taking apart the external and making it into an internal?I'm running Windows Vist on an HP machine. The external hard drive is a Western Digital 500gig "My Book" connected via FireWire.Any help would be great. If it's not possible, I'll just go buy an internal. ɹəuəllıʍ ʇɐb
I just went to the Carbonite Online Backup website, and there is no indication that it cannot backup files from an external HD. According to http://www.carbonite.com/en/home/online-backup-software/automated "If you see a file that isn’t backed up (but you’d like it to be), you can easily add it to your backup".Can't you add your external HD that way? bludgard
Is there a why to make the operating system think an external hard drive is an internal? Try installing a virtual machine to the external and see if you can back up the drive in that fashion. I have installed to and run virtual operating systems on/from external drives. If Carbonite will recognize the drive as an OS, I see no reason that it would not back up the data thereon. (This is only conjecture, of course; I do not subscribe to Carbonite ).
