Formatting HD to Fat 32

I am working on an older HP with a 10 Gb HD which is full and i am trying to add a 40 Gb HD but cannot get XP

Disk Management to format other than NTFS. I think it initially showed Fat32 but after formatting in NTFS it now only shows NTFS.

Even tried moving HD to another PC but no help.

I did new partition before trying to format.

Any ideas? TIA

You cannot format a volume larger than 32 gigabytes (GB) in size using the FAT32 file system during the Windows XP installation process. Windows XP can mount and support FAT32 volumes larger than 32 GB (subject to the other limits), but you cannot create a FAT32 volume larger than 32 GB by using the Format tool during Setup. If you need to format a volume that is larger than 32 GB, use the NTFS file system to format it. Another option is to start from a Microsoft Windows 98 or Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me) Startup disk and use the Format tool included on the disk.

You can use this freeware application (EaseUS Partition Master 9.1 Home Edition) :-

http://www.partition...om/personal.htm to format a 40GB drive to FAT32 (........ if you really need to :) )

I found info on the XP limit of 32 Gb or less but used the EASEUS Partition master which will let you format in fat 32 over 32 Mb.

Just curious: why would you want to format a disk with FAT, with all its limitations?
