jimrich Posted March 6, 2012 Report Share Posted March 6, 2012 Hello:My OS is Dell dim. 3000, win xp home, sp3, Toshiba 320GB USB external HDI am struggling with a Toshiba external HD that works sometimes but generally turns on and off when first connected. I have done everything imaginable to determine if the problem is with the (new) Toshiba drive itself or within my computer. I thought I had the problem fixed by formatting the drive yesterday with the Device Manger while it was in a working state. After several formats!, I placed a large amount of data/info on the external drive assuming it is now working but this morning the Toshiba drive is right back to turning on and off!!!My last effort was to look at the Event Log (which I do not know how to read) and saw may events within the time frame of my Toshiba failures so here is the event log info - please help me understand the message and what to do about it...............Applications:The description for Event ID ( 0 ) in Source ( gusvc ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: Service stopped. System:The system failed to flush data to the transaction log. Corruption may occur.... MANEMAN Posted March 7, 2012 Report Share Posted March 7, 2012 "( gusvc ) cannot be found", refers to Google update service, so therefore nothing whatsover to do with your current problem, or anything to worry about either. Quite a few of modern external drives are equipped with the auto-sleep function that you seem to be having problems with. Dependent on the model of Toshiba external drive, you may find that the Toshiba sleep removal tool could solve the problem Jim. Download the Toshiba Sleep Removal Tool v1.01 to remove the auto-sleep function of the Desktop External Hard Drive.Doing so will allow the Desktop External Hard Drive to be controlled by the computer's power management settings, and not the Toshiba drive management system. Download the Toshiba sleep removal tool here: http://download.tosh..._tool_v1.01.exe Connect the Desktop External Hard Drive to the computer and power it on Double-click on the Toshiba sleep removal tool and follow the on-screen instructions. You can also if you wish................ .=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=. Go to "Device Manager" expand USB Controllers. Right click on each icon and choose "Properties". Look for "Power Management" on each one and untick "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" .=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=. You can also............. Head off over to "Codeplex" and download "NoSleepHD" this was designed especially for external drives that do silly things. :) 1. Click 'Info' tab to view drive information.2. Monitor multiple drives by selecting, more drives in 'Configuration' tab. (Up to 5 External Hard Drives)3. Hard drive monitoring can be stopped if necessary. (Which would allow the drive to go to auto-sleep.4. Application can be chosen to sit in the System Tray or simply minimized.5. Auto-run at start-up can also be enabled. And that is it! No more annoying waiting/connection problem with your external hard disk. Here is the download link: http://nosleephd.codeplex.com/ I've done all of the above in the past, and then found out that there was a break right in the middle of the supply lead causing the problem. Damn clever the Chinese ! 9 times out of 10 (9/10) the sort of fault you are reporting is due to faulty plugs and sockets and/or breaks in leads. MANEMAN Posted March 7, 2012 Report Share Posted March 7, 2012 As an afterthought. Never plug an external drive into a USB hub. Back ports always seem to work better than front ones. (No, I dont know why ! It's maybe sumpthin' that just happens to me.) USB always seems to work better from a PCI card. ( Again probably wrong, - but seems that way to me. :) ) Pick up some salt with your right hand and throw it over your left shoulder before booting up. - That always works, and is technically proven by somebody somewhere. That's what makes me believe it's not a problem within the drive or it would perform the same way every time.On my win xp>Device manager>Universal Serial Bus>USB composite Device>Properties - there are no Power management tabs, just General, Driver, Details - nothing about "power". Further down the list at USB Root Hub>Properties there is one power tab in each listing but nothing re: Power Management> [box] Allow the computer to turn off this device...I installed the NoSleepHD app and am interested to see if it will keep this external HD turned on now that it seems to want to run.Re: wires. I have two connecting wires (new) and 6 USB ports but I seriously doubt that it's a physical/wiring issue since I've already tried all of that. There is on USB "hub" that I know of. If yours is not on the list this tool will not work.I did originally say "Dependent on the model of Toshiba external drive," but did not know the models. I can now say with some confidence that: It works only with the following models: PH3064U-1EXBPH3100U-1EXBCPH3100U-1EXBPH3200U-1EXB However.................... :) Looking through the forum, I found that you made another post where you state " Somehow the computer sees the Toshiba drive as a CD! " Which set me off on another trail of detective work. It seems that Toshiba loaded, either within a hidden partition, or the actual firmware a "Virtual CD Drive" on "some" models.To say that it is unpopular with most customers is an understatement. To find out whether your external hard disk is "Generation 1" or "Generation 2". - Evidently you read just after the part number for (gen1) or (gen2) I did find a virtual drive removal tool ( DuraMicro_release-20110808_VCD_Remove_and_Format_tool ) on a German website similar to our Mediafire.
