Dualboot Windows 7 and XP

I have a laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit, after the try to install XP in dual boot I have a problem.

Situation before XP

1 hdd with 4 partitions: bootloader, Windows 7, recovery, HP Tools

What I have done:

- deleted the recovery partition (after having created recovery DVDs)

- reallocated the partition as logical

- rebooted with XP CD and installed the OS

At this point I had 7 no more available and XP started as default.

Using EasyBCD I used the function to add a new OS, doing this, I had Windows 7 already in the list and nothing else, so I added a Windows XP, leaving to EasyBCD to find the correct drive letter.

I forgot to reinstall the Windows Vista/7 bootloader from EasyBCD, so at the reboot I had a message for ntoskrnl.exe corrupted or missing.

The 1st think I did to try to fix this was to recover XP, but didn't work.

Then I tried to reinstall XP, but after the files' copy at the restart, the ntoskrnl.exe message was still there, so I couldn't reinstall XP, there are only the files copied on the drive.

I've fixed this with Windows 7 DVD repairing the bootloader.

Now I'm no more able to install XP, anytime I try to install it again, when it restarts after the file copy, the error message appears again and it is not possible to complete the installation.

What can I try to do to install XP?

Usually the lower version Windows should be installed first, followed by the higher version. If you do that, pretty much everything will work automatically.

Sorry, I have no advice how to fix your current situation, but I'm sure other forum members will be able to give you better advice.

Brink over at Windows 7 Forums did a tutorial back in 2009 that you will find useful.
