Issues with expensive CNC machine running Windows 2000.

Recommended Posts

Greetings,

I have read many good posts on fixes on this forum, so I thank in advance anyone willing to offer any support. I undertook updating motion control software on a CNC machine at work. The new motion control software required windows updates. The computer runs Windows 2000, and was never hooked up to the internet until now and had no offline updates performed. Windows Update won't even run. I manually accessed the Windows Update Catalog online did some critical updates and made enough progress to get the updated motion control software running and we can now make parts. However, some features still do not work such as a 3D animation preview of the part the machine is making.

Because of this, I am interested in updating Windows 2000 enough so that Windows Update will run and I can set it to automatic updates and ensure future updates of the motion control software will work properly. I tried to install java, but the installation only gets halfway without crashing. I then tried to update Windows installer. Unfortunately I forgot that I had installed Windows Installer 3.1 a week earlier and installed Windows Installer 3.0 on top. Now when I try to install java, I get an error that says my Windows Installer cannot open.

Should I?

A. try and restore somehow to a backup I made a few weeks ago (never restored Windows 2000, a little scared)

B. try windows installer cleanup utility or

C. Add/Remove Programs and remove Windows Installer 3.1 and 3.0 and reinstall 3.1?

Thanks so much in advance!
