XP installation error

Hi,

I was lucky enough to get my hands on a laptop and Windows XP installation disc from my company for private use. Since the installed OS was all messed up and working extremely slowly, I wanted to do a clean install of XP. I wiped out the whole disk with a partitioning tool similar to FDISK.

Now, when I try to boot from the original installation disc, which came with the computer, I get an error:

STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF78D663C, 0xC0000034, 0, 0)

I checked the internet for information and found out that "7B and 34" probably show a problem with the harddrive controller. I also found out, that XP does not support eSata harddrives, but I think, that is what my laptop has. (Not sure though. Where can I make sure?) So it seems, that I need to get the correct drivers for my installation, but I am not sure, which ones are the correct. (And I don't have a floppy disk reader.)

My computer is a Dell Latitude E5400 and it came with "Windows XP Professional SP1a". I can only guess it must be the 32 bit Version.

It was possible for me to install Windows 8 without any problems but I don't own a license for it and don't want to buy one, so I would like to somehow get XP working again. It must be possible, since it was working before.

Any ideas what I need and where to get it from? Thank you very much for your time!

Welcome to the Windows Forum.

If I remember correctly, the XP installation gives you a chance to install additional HD drivers at the beginning of the installation. I think you need to press some Fx key.

P.S. go to http://www.dell.com/support/troubleshooting/us/en/04/Product/latitude-e5400 and enter your service tag to see the configuration of your Latitude E5400.
